« TU ES APPELÉ À PRÊCHER MON ÉVANGILE »

Cela faisait environ un mois que Parley P. Pratt était membre de l’Église quand il fut appelé « dans le désert » pour prêcher l’Évangile (Doctrine et Alliances 32:2). Il y avait encore moins de temps que Thomas B. Marsh était membre de l’Église quand il lui fut dit : « L’heure de ta mission est venue » (Doctrine et Alliances 31:3). De même, Orson Pratt, Edward Partridge et beaucoup d’autres venaient d’être baptisés quand leur appel en mission arriva. Peut-être en était-il ainsi par nécessité : à l’automne 1830, personne n’était membre de l’Église depuis plus de six mois. Mais cette façon de faire comporte aussi une leçon pour nous aujourd’hui : si vous en savez assez pour accepter l’Évangile rétabli en vous faisant baptiser, vous en savez assez pour en parler aux autres. Il va de soi que nous voulons toujours accroître notre connaissance de l’Évangile, mais Dieu n’a jamais hésité à faire appel aux personnes « sans instruction » pour prêcher (Doctrine et Alliances 35:13). En fait, il nous lance à tous cette invitation : « Ouvre la bouche pour annoncer mon Évangile » (Doctrine et Alliances 30:5). Et ce n’est pas par notre sagesse et notre expérience que nous le faisons le mieux, mais « par la puissance de l’Esprit » (Doctrine et Alliances 35:13).

“YOU ARE CALLED TO PREACH MY GOSPEL”

Parley P. Pratt had been a member of the Church for about a month when he was called “into the wilderness” to preach the gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 32:2). Thomas B. Marsh had been a member for even less time than that when he was told, “The hour of your mission is come” (Doctrine and Covenants 31:3). Orson Pratt, Edward Partridge, and many others had likewise barely been baptized when their mission calls came. Perhaps this timing was all of necessity—in the fall of 1830, no one had been a member of the Church for more than six months. But there’s also a lesson in this pattern for us today: if you know enough to accept the restored gospel by baptism, you know enough to share it with others. Of course we always want to increase our gospel knowledge, but God has never hesitated to call upon the “unlearned” to preach His gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 35:13). In fact, He invites all of us, “Open your mouth to declare my gospel” (Doctrine and Covenants 30:5). And we do that best not through our own wisdom and experience but “by the power of [the] Spirit” (Doctrine and Covenants 35:13).
