 « SI VOUS N’ÊTES PAS UN, VOUS N’ÊTES PAS DE MOI »

Pour les premiers saints, l’Église était plus qu’un endroit où écouter prêcher le dimanche. Dans toutes ses révélations à Joseph Smith, le Seigneur décrit l’Église par des mots tels que cause, royaume, Sion et, très souvent, œuvre. C’est peut-être en partie ce qui a attiré beaucoup des premiers membres vers l’Église. Ils aimaient certes la doctrine rétablie de l’Église, mais beaucoup voulaient aussi quelque chose à quoi ils pourraient consacrer leur vie. Malgré cela, le commandement donné par le Seigneur aux saints en 1830 de se rassembler en Ohio n’était pas facile à suivre pour certains. Pour des gens comme Phebe Carter, cela voulait dire quitter leur foyer confortable pour une frontière inconnue (voir « Voix du Rétablissement » à la fin de ce canevas). Aujourd’hui, nous voyons clairement ce que ces saints ne pouvaient voir qu’avec l’œil de la foi : le Seigneur leur avait préparé de grandes bénédictions en Ohio. Le besoin de se rassembler en Ohio est révolu depuis longtemps, mais aujourd’hui les saints s’unissent encore autour de la même cause, de la même œuvre : « Faire avancer Sion » (Doctrine et Alliances 39:13). Comme ces premiers saints, nous délaissons « les soucis du monde » (Doctrine et Alliances 40:2) parce que nous nous fions à la promesse du Seigneur : « Tu recevras […] une bénédiction si grande que tu n’en as jamais connu de pareille. » (Doctrine et Alliances 39:10).

“IF YE ARE NOT ONE YE ARE NOT MINE”

To the early Saints, the Church was more than a place to hear some preaching on Sunday. Throughout His revelations to Joseph Smith, the Lord described the Church with words like cause, kingdom, Zion, and, quite often, work. That may have been part of what attracted many early members to the Church. As much as they loved the Church’s restored doctrine, many also wanted something they could dedicate their lives to. Even so, the Lord’s 1830 command to the Saints to gather in Ohio was not easy for some to follow. For people like Phebe Carter, it meant leaving comfortable homes for an unfamiliar frontier (see “Voices of the Restoration” at the end of this outline). Today we can see clearly what those Saints could see only with the eye of faith: the Lord had great blessings waiting for them in Ohio. The need to gather to Ohio has long since passed, but Saints today still unite around the same cause, the same work: to “bring forth Zion” (Doctrine and Covenants 39:13). Like those early Saints, we forsake “the cares of the world” (Doctrine and Covenants 40:2) because we trust the Lord’s promise: “You shall receive ... a blessing so great as you never have known” (Doctrine and Covenants 39:10).
